Transjakarta Set to Manage Sea Transport by June 2027

By June 2027, PT Transjakarta is slated to manage maritime transport in Seribu Islands, according to the Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub). This strategic move aims to enhance regional connectivity and revitalize the economy for the islands' inhabitants.

Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Budi Awaluddin acknowledged that water transport services have yet to reach their full potential, directly affecting residents' livelihoods and economic growth.

"While we're positioning the Seribu Islands as a world-class travel destination, the transport system is still geared toward providing only basic commuting services," he expressed, during an evaluation meeting with the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission B, Thursday (9/3)

He pointed out that official services currently cover a mere 21 percent of the region's needs, forcing most travelers to depend on traditional boats with varying standards of safety and comfort.

"The risks are evident: in 2026 alone, seven accidents involving traditional vessels were reported. Many of them fail to meet maritime safety standards and are often overloaded. Compounding the issue is the low level of public compliance in using safety gear, including life jackets," he explained.

To handle these challenges, the city is pushing for a more reliable and fully integrated maritime transport network. By bringing Transjakarta on board, the city aims to harmonize service standards and eliminate the disparities that separate the Seribu Islands from the mainland.

Budi confirmed that the handover of management is currently under intensive discussion with Transjakarta.

"We are working to close the gap between Seribu Islands and our urban centers. Our goal is to make sure the archipelago keeps pace as Jakarta transforms into a global hub," he explained.

PT Transjakarta President Director, Welfizon Yuza highlighted a one-year target for the operational transition, setting June 2027 as the official launch date for their maritime services.

To ensure a smooth rollout, his party recently conducted field visits to Pari, Pramuka, Panggang, Kelapa, and Harapan islands to hear directly from the residents.

The feedback was clear, where the public is calling for better frequency, easier ticketing, and a significant boost in safety and connectivity. Moreover, the future of traditional boat businesses is a top priority.

"We’ve been in talks with local boat owners and operators. Inspired by how we manage land transport, they are eager to join us as partners and official operators within the Transjakarta network," he explained.

Transjakarta is also preparing a comprehensive strategic study that encompasses regulatory frameworks, operational models, human resources, port management, and transition schemes. This study further includes business models, market and demand analysis, financial projections, and social impact assessments.

In the initial stage, they will optimize assets currently owned by the Transportation Agency, including vessels, piers, and port facilities. Further, a complete overhaul of the ticketing system and service technology will be implemented to elevate the overall quality of the passenger experience.

For long-term development, Transjakarta is considering a 'hub-and-spoke model', where large-capacity vessels serve main routes from Jakarta to primary islands, complemented by feeder boats connecting to other islands.

According to Welfizon, the service expansion will target more than just passenger mobility; it will also encompass logistics and tourism. Transjakarta plans to explore non-farebox revenue streams, including port management, freight services, and tourism-related ventures.

"This strategy aims to bolster long-term business sustainability and achieve financial self-sufficiency," he emphasized.
